from the trees
it is said
that if we had not
been given Torah
we would have learned all we needed to know about being human from the animals
and perhaps if there had not been Sinai
had we not been given this Tree of Life
we would have learned what we need to know about being a people
from the living trees:
how we gather together
roots intertwining, thirsting
for our common source
how the older will shelter the younger
{the young spring up tender
encircling the elders}
how we learn to sway with the wind
- --and do not s h a t t e r
how we must r e a c h upward
ever seeking light
{some¬times we
must lean far
out grown sideways
bending and twisting
finding our sun
ljght far from
where we were
roo t e d}
how we must live by reaching down within –
our roots our source sustaining us—
¬by reaching up reaching out –
the light the sun the air the seasons
the rain the dew
enlivens us-¬
all these things we might learn from the trees
