Leaving Mitzrayim
Ha lo tov lanu shuv Mitzraymah?
would it not be better, to return to Mitzrayim?
out here all the wilderness spreads around us
we are very small
out here
the sky endless above us
the desert naked before us
out here we are vulnerable
we are seen
--what will this day bring?--
would it not be better, to return to Mitzrayim?
out here
in uncertain vulnerability
I turn
cover my face with shame
and walk back to mitzrayim
--the narrow places--
the sea was eager to take me back across
from the far side
i watch
and remember:
how i danced for joy
on the shores of freedom
now i wait and wait
for the sea to part again
even for a moment.
i will run to freedom.
Do not bury me in Mitzrayim.
